A Beginning Grower series workshop last year at the Davey Lopes Recreation Center's community garden.

The first workshop in our Beginning Organic Grower series, Planning and Planting, will be on April 16th at the Davey Lopes Recreation Center on the southside of Providence! Learn how to start your garden off right this spring and cultivate plants organically, without harmful pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. The free workshop will be led by City Farm Steward Rich Pederson, who has extensive experience using biointensive organic growing methods here in Providence.

Following the workshop, we will be launching the pilot HUB of the new Providence Community Growers Network at Davey Lopes and distributing compost and seeds to those who have joined. Click here to read more about the Network.

The Planning and Planting workshop will be offered again the next day (Sunday, April 17th) in Spanish from 1-2 pm at Templot Community Garden (40 Appleton St. in Olneyville) by garden leader Jairo Rosales. We are proud that all three workshops in the series will be available in both English and Spanish this year—a Spanish version of the Plant Providence calendar is coming soon!

The other dates and topics in the series are

  • II: Weeding, Harvesting, and Fall Crops — Sat., July 9th, 10-11 am and Sun., July 10th, 1-2 pm
  • III: Putting Gardens to Bed — Sat., Oct. 8th, 10-11 am and Sun., Oct. 9th, 1-2 pm
