On wet, gray, rainy days like this we like to think, “Hey, at least the plants are enjoying it.” Seeds and seedlings require a lot of moisture to grow! But on those hot, sunny days (and despite how it feels, they are coming), you’ll need to help out your plants by keeping them watered.
What if, instead of pulling treated water from your hose or tap, you were able to give your plants water you saved earlier when it was literally raining down free from the sky? And what if in storing that rainwater, you were also preventing stormwater drains from being overloaded by a sudden influx of runoff that can collect harmful chemicals and debris?
You can do it with a rain barrel! Learn how to set one up in your garden at our free workshop a week from today on Wednesday, April 20th from 6-7 pm at the African Alliance Community Garden (located at 32 Diamond St. in south Providence). Join us for this quick “learning hour” between work and dinner that will give you tips on where you can buy barrels—or make your own. At the workshop, we’ll also be holding a drawing for a free 55-gallon rain barrel donated by Narragansett Bay Commission; everyone who attends can enter to win! Click here to preregister.
